Chrysanthemum, Garden Mums or Mums

Chrysanthemum, Garden Mums or Mums (Hindi Name: Guldaudi)

Chrysanthemum, also known as Guldaudi has a great popularity among flower lovers.

I grow the Chrysanthemums on my balcony container garden since I have limited space.

I am big fan of Chrysanthemum flower because of its tremendous variety in sizes, shapes and colors makes it the most sought winter flower.

Chrysanthemum flowers from November to end January. Blooming non-stop through the growing season, they’ll make perfect specimens to brighten any garden spot.

Every year I will add few new varieties in my garden. This year I brought some routed cuttings from local nursery, some of them have started to bloom and some of them yet to come.

So I brought some flowered plant (different varieties) to add colours in my garden.

It is easy to grow plant in containers. It requires fun sun and high feed. Chrysanthemums require high level of nitrogen and phosphorus in the vegetative growth stage. Cow dung is a good feed for this plant.

Varieties:
Commonly accepted classification of Chrysanthemum varieties is based on bloom, shape, size and relative number of florets, their shape, arrangement and direction of growth. Main varieties are as given below:

Regular Incurved: Florets may be narrow or broad. They are incurved in regular pattern to form a perfect ball. Central disc is not visible, e.g. Mountaineer, Snow ball, Kings Pleasure etc.

Incurving: Florets are incurved upward in indefinite manner. The bloom is not a compact ball due to loose fitting arrangement of florets,e.g. Pink Cloud, Classic Beauty etc.

Reflex: Outer florets may be narrow or broad, they bend backward and downward. Inner florets remain incurved at the early stage concealing central disc, e.g. Star of India, Beatrice may etc.

Spider: Florets are tubular and elongated with tips open or closed, e.g. Miss Universe, Flirtation etc.

Anemone: Disc florets are well developed, Ray florets may be flat or twisted,e.g.Rosa,Gem.

Button: Florets are short, hemi-spherical and radiate in all directions.Blooms are small and compact, about 1 inch in diameter e.g. Lillyput, King Fisher etc.

Korean or Garden Mum: These may be single or double. Ray florets are strap like, bloom flat and disc is well visible, e.g. Alpana, Priya etc.

Pompon: Florets are short, broad and uniformly arranged to give bloom a compact hemi-spherical shape, e.g. Birbal Sahni, Maharaja etc.

 Enjoy the beauty !!!
 Happy Gardening !!!
