Gazania, Treasure Flower

Gazania, Treasure Flower 

Species: Gazania ringens, Gazania splendens

This tough plant endures poor soil, baked conditions, and drought beautifully and still produces bold-color, daisy like flowers to all spring.  
It also known as Treasure Flower. The unreal, vividly colored flowers of this South African plant bring a touch of the exotic to the garden. Excellent for sun-baked sites with dry soil. 
Gazania 'Daybreak Red Stripe' bears golden-yellow flowers with a bold stripe running down each petal. It grows 10 inches tall.
Gazania 'Daybreak Tiger Stripes Mix' bears yellow, pink, orange, and cream flowers with a contrasting band down each petal. It grows 10 inches tall.
 Gazania is grown as an annual elsewhere and blooms from mid-summer to frost. A spring plant often grown as an annual, gazania bears boldly colored daisy-shaped flowers from summer to frost. The flowers appear over toothed dark green or silver leaves (the foliage color differs between varieties). They're great in beds and borders and containers, too.

 A typical daisy like flower up to about 10cm across, they are commonly banded with a dark zone around the central disc. Some types may have linear petal strips also. Colours vary from white, cream, yellow, gold, orange to the very dark reds, pale to dark lilac variations are possible also. Flowers are produced on stems up to 25cm in length, these close in the evening or on dark overcast days. Leaves turn upwards at night. Plants require high light for the flowers to open.

Summer Sizzler - 4. Cosmos Sulphureus (Orange cosmos, Yellow cosmos)


It’s been hotter and hotter in Gurgaon and plant’s will die if we don’t take extra care this time. 

Are there any plants that thrive in these conditions and will beautify your gardens all summer? Of course, they are! 

I am back with my Summer Sizzlers series which I have started last year. 
Here is the fourth one of Great Summer Sizzlers series. Plant it and be cool all summer along.

 1. Cosmos Sulphureus (Common Name: Orange cosmos, Yellow cosmos)

Lacy foliage and silky flowers give an airy touch to the garden from midsummer to frost. Wonderful for cutting. Tolerates poor soil, heat and humidity. Easy to grow. Grows best in full sun. The flowers of all Cosmos attract birds and butterflies. Proven tops for performance and adaptability.

The orange yellow cosmos is becoming increasingly popular for its ease of growth, spectacular flowers and attractiveness to butterflies. Orange/ Yellow cosmos has rich green feathery foliage that is coarser than that of the common cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus) but is just as pretty.

Depending on variety and conditions, yellow cosmos will grow anywhere from 1 to 7 ft in height. Whatever the height, each plant will produce quantities of solitary, bowl-shaped yellow to orange flowers that are 2-3 in (in diameter).
